The Henry Hoover

Nik holding Henry the Hoover

The Henry Hoover. It’s not made by Hoover – It’s by Numatic.

This machine is manufactured by Numatic International and was born in 1981. Often seen around Office buildings and building sites this machine is reliable if treated correctly although ideally should receive a Service by us every now and again (Depending on it’s daily usage type). The Henry is a Cylinder type machine, since 2017 this has a 920 watt motor (The older, more desirable machines had a 1200 Watt motor).

The Henry, and His Sister ‘Hetty’ are both designed to be used WITH A BAG ! This is a vital point and one to remember.

There is a white ‘Bucket Filter’ under the motor housing (The Black Bit) – despite it’s name this is not there to filter dust and debris – it is there to ‘filter’ the bag from getting sucked into the motor !

(The Wet/Dry Charles and George can be used without a bag if cleaning up liquid but still must use a bag if being used for dry work)

I have seen many times a poor neglected Henry with a blown Motor because the customer thought that the machine did not need a bag – this is a catastrophic mistake, of course I always replace the motor as by this time the brushes and commutator are destroyed.

Common problems:

  • Intermittent motor, cuts in and out.
  • Cannot change speed (models with speed control switch).
  • Popping Motor.
  • Dead, will not turn on at all.
  • Horrendous noise.
  • Smelling of burning electronics.

All of these are common problems we see often, we can of course fix everything but the main things to remember are: Use a bag and have the machines serviced annually.

The machines do not clean your carpets, they are more suited for just picking things up off of the surface. Because these use a bag they can be used for plaster or brick dust in most cases – very unlike any Bagless machine on the market, I will come to that in a later post when covering Dyson.
